The law firm of Kitoh & Takeuchi LPC was founded in 2005 by Haruo Kitoh and Yumi Takeuchi, a husband-and-wife legal, who were both admitted as lawyers in Japan in 2000. Our firm was subsequently incorporated in 2008.

Lawyers invariably handle complex matters that are intricately intertwined with social, economic, and legal values, none of which are straightforward. In the cases that we have handled in our legal careers spanning close to 25 years, almost every case has had its own unique and novel challenges and hurdles. 

All of these cases have profound implications for the clients’ lives. Since lawyers are always juggling dozens of these cases at the same time, a lawyer’s job can be very challenging!  We often find myself mulling over clients’ cases outside of the normal business hours—early in the morning, late at night, and even on holidays!

If these cases had been our own personal problems, we would most certainly have been crushed by the pressure. However, the reason why lawyers can remain cool, calm, and collected while handling dozens of cases all at the same time is that the issues involved in these cases are those of another person (nonetheless, this does not mean that a lawyer takes your problems lightly). It is extremely difficult for a person to analyze their own problems objectively by himself or herself. Inevitably, your own desires, lack of knowledge, and inclinations based on your own experiences get in the way.

Lawyers can objectively analyze the problems of others and identify information to craft appropriate solutions. In doing so, the most important thing is evidence! Evidence includes not only such items as contractual documents and eyewitness testimony, but also smartphones, security cameras, and expert opinions, among others. If there is no strong evidence, it is necessary to continue trying to find evidence even if it seems like a long shot (the knowledge and experience of a lawyer can also be valuable in searching for evidence). Then, rather than simply presenting the evidence that is favorable to the client, it is necessary to honestly assess the evidence that may be disadvantageous to the client. There are all kinds of things we need to consider over and over from various angles; for example, what facts will emerge from all of the evidence and how to present the facts effectively and persuasively to the counterparty and the judge (or jury).

We believe that a relationship of trust between a lawyer and a client is naturally built when a lawyer plays this role for a client and when a client understands the role of a lawyer.
